Tagging with Energyworx

In our last blog, Energyworx described the smart grid and its many datasources. Now we take a look at the best way to gain insight from Data Diversity.

connect-20130403-twitter-465x465-7For most, tagging is synonymous with social media. It is a clever method for providing extra data on a topic and the ability to search and query on the specific tag. Twitter popularized the “hashtag” but it is now a standard feature of most social media platforms.

How does Energyworx use Tagging?

Energyworx is able to annotate specific data points and datasources, creating custom groups that can be queried within (milli-) seconds. This allows users to request information from specific accounts, groups, meters, etc. as needed.

Tags are often used for sophisticated analysis of energy (efficiency) performance for specific groups of buildings, accounts or meters. Common tags used by our customers include:

– Zip Code

– Family size

– Building/Residence Type & Size

– Year Built

– Solar

– EV

Tags can even include technical characteristics of equipment used for asset optimization and performance.

Energyworx and customers add tags to datasources using the Energyworx API or through an application frontend. Adding and removing tags is a very simple process that quickly leads to actionable insights.

Energyworx Use Cases with Tagging

Energyworx has employed tagging in several use cases. Here’s a look at two applications where tagging plays an important role.

Multisite is a white-label web application for businesses with multiple facilities. The user can add, remove and edit characteristics (tags and properties) per site. This enables the user to make selections of sites based on these tags and properties. The Multisite web application visualizes electric consumption, gas consumption and back delivery of electricity (CHP/solar) in many forms such as bar and line charts. Users can also download consumption and back delivery data of the selected sites in Excel or CSV format for further analysis. Energy Atlas was developed for a major housing corporation that wanted to better understand the energy performance of its housing stock. The application normalizes energy usage across 10,000 properties and uses over 100,000 tags to enable intuitive comparisons and performance tracking of the energy savings and ROI of various energy efficiency measures. This gave the housing corporation greater understanding of which energy efficiency measures would be most likely to succeed in a particular region or residence type.
